Excuse the obvious Photoshop explosion! I was playing around and trying new things!
My brows and I have always been pretty close friends. I remember the first time my eyes were opened to the importance of maintaining groomed brows like it was yesterday: my childhood friend, who lived across the street from me, tweezed them- and that was literally all it took. Ever since that afternoon, I've remained a believer in that doing your eyebrows is like a mini-makeover (and I try to keep them up as much as possible. It's easier said than done, though!). In 7th grade I began tweezing/trimming them on my own, which was the easiest way for me to achieve the best result according to my facial features- I did get them waxed once or twice but it just didn't look right on me.
In regards to actual brow products, the most I used until about a year ago was ELF's clear brow gel. Mine have always been naturally on the full side so an actual brow powder/pencil/wax was never much of a necessity. However, I like to fill in the outside corners of my brows to better frame my eyes- to do this, you need some type of product.
I played around with MAC Impeccable Brow Pencil in Taupe and it's won a special place in my heart. That being said, curiousity got the best of me and I had to try something new- which brings us to this little guy: Maybelline Eyestudio MasterShape brow pencil.
MasterShape by Eyestudio (around $8-9 depending on your location) is a somewhat recent launch by Maybelline- I believe it came out around the time that the Master Drama eyeliners were released (correct me if I'm wrong?). Regardless, I had read several mixed reviews which made me even more eager to try it myself.
The pencil is touted as having a wax-like formula with buildable pigmentation, according to Maybelline's website. It's double ended with a spoolie to help comb brows into place. I am one to COMPLETELY overlook the importance of spoolies, but I have to say this one actually does tame brows! I was really surprised how well it worked as you can probably tell from my mild excitement.
Like I mentioned earlier, my only other experience with brow pencils is MAC's Impeccable in Taupe- a favorite of mine which may or may not have reached HG status- so it's safe to say Maybelline's has some competition. That being said the two are quite different in formula. MAC Impeccable brow pencils are harder in consistency, whereas the Maybelline is softer, creamier. It also has medium pigmentation (making it absolutely perfect for beginners so you really can't overdo it). I love this about the MasterShape, but something still seems to be lacking.
At the end of the day, I'm just not a huge fan of the Maybelline pencil's shade- the one I have is Soft Brown and it's a little red for my coloring. They only come in 4 shade options (Blonde, Soft Brown, Deep Brown, Auburn) and I think after this trial I prefer more of a selection, or at least something that leans a little less warm and more taupe. Below are some swatches so you can get a little better understanding:
I like the Maybelline MasterDrama brow pencil enough to use it up, but I'll probably look for something else in a more suitable color before I repurchase. For now, I think I'll stick with my MAC Impeccable Brow Pencil in Taupe and suck up the slightly higher price tag. I'd definitely recommend the former, though, if you can find a decent color match- the affordability and quality of the pencil itself makes it quite a fabulous drugstore find.
What do you think? Have you tried these for yourself? Thanks for reading! <3
